Interior Styling 2023 Trends

There’s a lot to look forward to next year, with some of our favorite trends in 2022 continuing to evolve and develop as we transition into 2023. With classic storylines of biophilia going strong and nature-inspired hues increasing in popularity, giving your home a makeover doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming.

In fact, a few small changes could be all the transformation you need to bring a tired space right up-to-date. Whether you’re looking to refresh one room or the whole house, here are some super-easy styling tips that could make a big difference. See our Interior Styling 2023 guide below for ways to instantly elevate your home.

Tip #1: Choose a leafy mural for the bedroom

One of the quickest ways to transform your home is to pay homage to the natural world and the beauty that we see when we’re outdoors. According to Pinterest, there’s been a huge upsurge in searches for “biophilic bedroom design”, so if you’re going to choose any room to update, make it your most private space.

The bedroom is where relaxation is usually the one and only goal, so it makes sense to adopt green color schemes, biophilic patterns, botanical art and organic textures in the design. If you want to step things up a notch with your boudoir-based interior styling, 2023 is definitely the year for big, bold leafy wallpapers.

Just one simple feature wall bursting with herbaceous hues can inject a sense of calm, giving you the perfect place to destress at the end of the day. And for those who are bored of sage or olive green colour palettes, there’s a new colour combo in town – pink and green. This adds a whole other dimension to botanical wallpapers, adding a playful and slightly daring twist to a wholesome trend.

Tip #2: Go curvy with your communal seating

If you want to make your communal areas as comfortable and inviting as possible, it’s time to let science lead the way in your decorating efforts. Research shows that objects with rounded edges – compared to square edges – are more likely to help us feel at ease.

As highlighted by various 2023 trend reports, curves are kind of a big deal. This narrative can be depicted by physical curves and arches within a building’s architecture (for instance, a rounded archway instead of a door or large radius windows). Additionally, it can be portrayed in the shape of your furniture, in painted or sculptural artworks, and through the visual power of prints and patterns.

Pinterest searches for “round sofas” have tripled, so swapping out old seating for something with soft edges and smooth curves could be an easy way to hit the refresh button on your living or dining space. You can combine this with interesting shapes elsewhere in your design concept, with a wallpaper mural being a super quick fix if you don’t have a huge budget to play with.

Tip #3: Decorate with mood-lifting colours

For some colorful interior styling, 2023 is going to be all about nature-inspired palettes – but with a fun and exciting twist. For instance, we’ve already mentioned the playful combination of pink and green, which helps to create a natural yet retro look in the home. Another color you may want to explore is WGSN’s Colour of the Year, ‘Digital Lavender’…

This electric hue is both calming and cheerful at the same, helping to soothe while lifting the mood on a gloomy day. In addition to lavender, there are a range of warm and cozy mauves, plums, purples, pinks, and stunning pastels to explore.

Known to create an effortless look, open up small spaces, and have a soothing effect, tonal color schemes can instantly make you feel grounded. You can explore this color palette through ombre interiors, monochromatic design techniques, and also with watercolour murals that are easy on the eye.

Tip #4: Get full-on with floral fractals

Floral fractals are loved by all and are perfect for any room in the house. This is because they are generally non-offensive, even for people who don’t particularly love flowers – and the patterns that they form are known to reduce stress in humans.

There’s been research to show that stress reduction happens when the fractal structure of the eye matches the fractal structure of what we’re looking at – and this is what makes the petals and leaves on flowering plants so pleasing to us.

This is similar to other patterns we see all over nature, such as branching trees, snowflakes, and even waves in the sea. This goes to explain why we have all been so obsessed with botanical and biophilic design lately, and why floral wallpapers are making such a big comeback. After a couple of pandemic-stricken years, it appears we’re all looking for a form of release – so don’t hold back with your floral-inspired decorating efforts. Granny chic is back and it’s here to stay.

Prefer the less is more approach? You can instantly spruce up a bedroom with a few flower arrangements, or even some dried foliage to add color and texture. Or if you want to add flowers in an on-trend, instagrammable way, why not explore the Chinoiserie trend?

Tip #5: Think gold for interior styling, 2023 and beyond…

We love that pure opulence is coming back in, and we believe it’s going to be a timeless story that sticks around for quite a few years, not just in 2023. So if you’re interested in adding gold décor to your home for instant charm, class and elegance, we recommend seriously investing.

Opt for quality pieces that can be seamlessly matched to your evolving interior concept for years to come. Think gold or brass lamps and light fittings, metallic chair and table legs, gold hues in soft furnishings, and small features that can often be overlooked such as cupboard door knobs (the devil is in the detail).

You can also look for pops of gold in prints and patterns to be used around the home. For instance, this ‘Ornamental Tiger Blue’ wallpaper makes the perfect feature wall for a high-end living room. It oozes grown-up glamour and grandeur without being gaudy – striking the perfect balance between bling and sophistication.

Using "Mood-lifting" colors at home when decorating it is an idea I really want to try. With how tough life is nowadays, I would really want to find a way to uplift the spirits of everyone in my family as easily as possible, and this mood might help with that. I'll go and look for an interior design expert in the area that can help us put this idea to good use for sure.

Hi Afton, thank you for your comment and we totally understand. Mood-lifting colours would be perfect, especially during the darker, winter months.
